Love Paper - A Global Campaign from Two Sides
St Austell Printing Company have been working together with Two Sides for many years, to dispel environmental misconceptions around print and paper. Two Sides’ latest project, Love Paper, is a global campaign to tell consumers across the world the positive messages about print, paper and paper-based packaging. Love Paper focuses on paper’s ability to help with learning, to enhance creativity and improve mental wellbeing, all whilst being renewable, recyclable and made from natural, sustainable materials.
The facts highlighted by the Love Paper Campaign include details around sustainability:
- Paper has a high recycling rate – over 82% of European paper packaging is recycled.
- European forests, which provide 90% of the wood fibre used by the European pulp and paper industry, have grown by an area the size of Switzerland in just 15 years. They grow at a rate of an area equivalent to 1,500 football pitches every day.
- In Europe, paper is recycled on average 3.5 times, it cannot be recycled indefinitely, hence the need for fresh fibre from sustainably managed forests.
- Digital communications have significant environmental impacts. The ICT industry accounted for around 5% of global electricity use in 2020, more than 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The electronic waste problem is also colossal and growing.
The Love Paper campaign also highlights benefits of print over digital communications:
- 52% of European consumers believe that children learn more when reading printed, rather than digital, books and course materials.
- 32% of respondents to a Two Sides survey feel they are suffering from digital overload, and 49% agree that they spend too long on digital devices. Consumers throughout Europe love reading in print, with many understanding the importance of “switching off”.
The Love Paper campaign is run by a not-for-profit organisation. Anyone printing their paper marketing materials, envelopes, cardboard or paper packaging sustainably can qualify to use the Love Paper logo on their print to help promote the sustainability of print, paper and paper-based packaging.
